After the main ceremony, each school holds its own individual ceremony where students cross the stage and receive their diploma.
Locations vary by school: Engineering, Business, Law, Medicine, etc. Check the Commencement schedule for exact times and venues.
These are more intimate and personal — names are read, students walk across stage. This is the emotional highlight for families.

Day 20 (Sat) option: Could squeeze in between Sweetgreen (11:40) and Morgan Library (11:45) — but only ~5 min available, not enough. Better as a post-Morgan stop if willing to shift timings.

🏛️ Stanford Landmarks — A 130-Year Arc
Grief → Faith → Power → Innovation → Discovery → Art → Reflection
Each era's landmark says something about what Stanford (and America) cared about at that moment.
💀 Death & Founding (1884–1891)
Leland Stanford Jr. dies of typhoid at 15 (1884). His grieving parents build a university "for the children of California." Frederick Law Olmsted (Central Park designer) lays out the campus; Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge (H.H. Richardson's firm) design the Quad in Romanesque sandstone.
Mausoleum (Leland Sr. & Jr.'s tomb) ↗
⛪ The First Generation (1891–1906)
Stanford opens Oct 1, 1891. Main Quad goes up. Memorial Church — Jane Stanford's gift in memory of her husband — dedicated 1903. Arizona Garden planted in this era, a Victorian desert curiosity. Then the 1906 earthquake shatters the Quad and Memorial Church. Both rebuilt painstakingly — but the church never recovers its original spires. Quake scars still visible in the Quad's arcades.
Memorial Church ↗ · Arizona Garden ↗ · Main Quad ↗
🗼 The Hoover Era (1919–1941)
Herbert Hoover (Stanford '95) establishes the Hoover Institution in 1919 to study war and peace. Hoover Tower rises in 1941 — 285ft of California mission-style with a carillon. Vertical landmark visible for miles.
Hoover Tower ↗
🔧 The Garage That Changed Everything (1939)
Bill Hewlett & Dave Packard (Stanford grads) rent a small garage at 367 Addison Ave, Palo Alto. Their oscillators become HP, and Silicon Valley's origin story begins. A coin flip decided the name — "Hewlett-Packard" not "Packard-Hewlett."
HP Garage (367 Addison Ave) ↗
📡 Cold War & The Dish (1960s)
The Stanford Dish goes up in 1966 — a 150ft radio telescope owned by the US Dept of Defense, used to study the ionosphere and communicate with satellites. Becomes a local hiking landmark. SLAC also built (1962) — the 2-mile underground particle accelerator.
The Dish Trailhead ↗ · SLAC ↗
🎨 Earthquake & Renewal (1989–2000s)
Loma Prieta earthquake (1989) damages Memorial Church again — this time badly. 10-year restoration. The original 1894 museum (Leland Stanford Jr. Museum) reopens as the Cantor Arts Center in 1999. The Rodin Sculpture Garden joins it — one of the largest Rodin collections outside Paris.
Cantor Arts Center ↗ · Rodin Sculpture Garden ↗
🕊️ The Contemplative Turn (2014–present)
Nathan Oliveira's Windhover Contemplative Center opens in 2014 — quiet meditation on art and nature, very different in spirit from the VC-powered campus around it. Stanford coming full circle back to the reflective intentions of its founders.
Windhover Contemplative Center ↗
The Thread: Mausoleum → Memorial Church → Hoover Tower → HP Garage → The Dish → Cantor → Windhover
The Arc: Grief → Faith → Power → Innovation → Discovery → Art → Reflection
👼 Angel of Grief & Where to Study Stanford History
👼 Angel of Grief
In the Stanford Arboretum, tucked in a quiet corner near the Mausoleum — behind the Main Quad, just off Lasuen Mall. Outdoors in a shaded grove surrounded by trees and shrubbery. Visible from outside (no building to enter), but deliberately tucked away and easy to miss. Unpaved, unmarked path from main routes.

There are actually two:
• The original marble copy (weathered, arms damaged) — near the Mausoleum
• A bronze replica (more intact) placed nearby as a replacement

Angel of Grief, Stanford Arboretum ↗
📚 Stanford University Archives & Special Collections
2nd floor, Green Library West. 6,200+ collections of manuscripts, photos, maps, university records. Open to the public (bring photo ID). The California Historical Society Collection is also housed here.
